South Africans are celebrating the news that a Brenda Fassie biopic is in the works, and already have a few ideas about who they think should play the role

Entertainment blogger Phil Mphela shared a screenshot of a press release confirming that UK film company, Showbizbee, had bought the rights for the film.

The biopic will reportedly be written and directed by Edward W. Shaw. Bongani’s son has also been named as a co-producer.

Phil added in another post that the late singer’s biopic will be a comedy-drama.

“The production company’s statement says the film will be period comedy-drama. Ohhhkay. Anyway, the success of this project will rest on a strong script & lead,” he wrote on Twitter.

The success of the film will also depend on who plays Brenda Fassie.

The Weekend Special singer is a tough act to imitate, and her fans will no doubt have a lot to say about who fills her shoes in her role.

Actress Brenda Ngxoli has come out as a firm favourite for the role, with many saying she would do Brenda proud

TV and radio personality Anele Mdoda agrees.

“Brenda Ngxoli should play Brenda Fassie. Full Stop,” she tweeted.

Thandiswa Mazwai gave the suggestion a big thumbs-up.

“I have always said… only she can give it the depth it deserves. She can go the full scope of Brenda’s life in her acting. Only Brenda Ngxoli!!!

But Brenda’s not the only favourite. Singer Winnie Khumalo’s vocals were described by some Twitter users as perfect for the role, while others were team Nomuzi ‘Moozlie’ Mabena

Actress Masasa Mbangeni also made the cut. Some were convinced film producers would shun local talent for someone like American star Jennifer Hudson.

The biopic will reportedly be released later this year.
