The South African province of KwaZulu-Natal (better known as KZN) is popular for its gorgeous beaches, almost year-round balmy weather, friendly locals, and natural areas that are nothing short of breathtaking…

Locals and visitors who want the ultimate in a combination of romance and fun for the perfect date night are spoilt for choice in KZN.

Here are some excellent date night ideas for Durban and its surrounding towns:

1. Helicopter flips

There are so many spectacular mountains, valleys, beaches and towns to explore, and seeing them from the height of a helicopter is guaranteed to impress. It is also exciting and sure to get the heart racing (or is that your date?) Land somewhere pretty and enjoy a picnic together if you really want to impress him or her.

2. A beach horse ride for two

Explore the stunning Elephant Coast on the back of a well-trained and responsive horse. There are a number of horse safari providers that offer couples the opportunity to see this and other gorgeous stretches of the shore – a perfect way to work up an appetite before a romantic meal out.

3. Gone gondola-ing

The canals at the Point Waterfront beckon couples to explore them in an authentic Venetian-style gondola. Watch the twinkling lights of the shops and restaurants here or stare up at the stars as you wind your way along the water in a setting that is just a little magical. This is great in the late afternoon and early evening, when the heat of the day has passed.

4. Hot-air balloon adventures

You’ll have a hard time trying to beat the breathtaking scenery of a hot-air balloon flight over the magnificent Natal Midlands and the Drakensberg. Sundowners or a champagne breakfast are the perfect ways to end off an exhilarating flight with an extra touch of romance.

5. Yacht cruises

Watch the sun set and smell the crisp saltiness of the Indian Ocean on a yacht cruise, hand in hand with your dream date. Thanks to the massive working harbour in Durban, there are a number of tours and cruises available to couples.

6. Picnic time

The Makaranga Botanical Gardens in Kloof are pretty, quiet and close to the hub of the Durban city centre. So, not only is it intimate and inviting for couples, but it is also perfectly positioned to explore after a lazy lunch date or before a dinner date. Little ponds, charming bridges and gorgeous statues make this a really beautiful escape from the city.

7. Ice skating

The Durban Ice Arena has a Friday night disco, plenty of entertainment and, of course, a massive ice rink. Naturally, you have to hold hands while careening around on the ice together. Safety first!

8. Walks on the beach

It doesn’t really matter where you are or what you enjoy, a walk on the beach is a winner. Feel the soft KZN sand under your feet, the warm waters of the Indian Ocean lapping at your toes, and the sunshine on your shoulders as you take a stroll together. Ballito, Durban, Umhlanga and the whole of the Elephant Coast promise plenty of exquisite beaches to explore while you chat with and learn about each other, and fall even more in love. The Umhlanga Promenade is also a hit for couples.
