A few years ago I met a bubbly, funny and unfiltered woman by the name of Leigh at a launch in Cape Town. I was drawn to how frank she was and we spent the evening discussing various topics over wine.
The conversation prompted me to start reading her blog which was mainly about make-up
At the time lip gloss was as far as I went, but I kept reading for her authentic voice and honestly hilarious reviews. A while later she tweeted that she was looking for a fashion writer so I put my name in the hat.
After I few articles, it became evident that I might have oversold myself. Leigh had the patience of a Tibetan monk wanting a South African visa, and coached me through all the technical bits until I got the hang of it.
After a year she gently suggested that I start writing about other topics
At that point fate brought me in touch with the lovely Sasha and I never looked back. Under her skillful editing eye and constant encouragement, I began to blossom as a writer.
I became comfortable writing about such a wide range of topics. This in turn led me to write about personal situations where I was not always the hero in the story. These ranged from horrible dates to the times I didn’t meet the personal goals I set for myself.
Along the way there were also triumphant recountings of the highlights of my life including fantastic travels and work milestones.
It has been a fantastic ride and taught me to be vulnerable enough to write about my inner life honestly and trust it will be well received
This wonderful phase has come to an end. It has been a fantastic ride and taught me to be vulnerable enough to write about my inner life honestly and trust it will be well received.
In turn this has given me the confidence to pursue more writing with the same kind of passion.
There are some ambitious goals I have my eye on in the new year
Some of them are so high profile simply the thought of applying terrifies me, but I’m going to try anyway. My plan for 2018 is to write prolifically, travel often and polish my plans for world domination.
Thank you for sharing this part of the journey with me: may the next twelve months be equally fruitful for you.
