It’s very frustrating to have a favourite shirt ruined by a perpetual underarm stain you can’t banish, or even a ring around the collar that won’t budge. Here’s the best way to tackle these stubborn stains, and get your favourite shirt back in circulation again…
What’s in the stain?
Gross as it is to contemplate, knowing what substance makes these stains persist helps you tackle them. They’re a mixture of salty sweat, body oils (which are stronger in all our crevice areas, like underarms) general grime and bacteria.
This is why bleaches and other laundry detergents don’t get great results.
The protein and fat components are not washed out – and this is the key to getting rid of them forever.
Use an enzyme cleaner
While you do get enzymatic washing powders, you may find you need a bit of extra help for this task.
- You can crush digestive enzyme pills, and form a paste with a little water.
- Rub into the stain and let it sit for four hours or so.
- Then toss in the wash as usual.
While we’d always advise spot testing with certain fabrics, this neat little trick is a great way to get your wardrobe looking good again.
