2017 is coming to a close, which means the school holidays are almost here. Any ideas on where to take the crew this year?

If you’re thinking about trying something different this time around, you can set your sights on something a little more adventurous than your parents’ place.

“Keeping it local means minimal travelling. This is important for families with little ones”, says Sharmila Ragunanan Group Marketing Manager of Dream Hotel & Resorts. “Right now, there is an incredible GLT (great little place) in your own province, just waiting to be called home over the holidays. You’ll be amazed at what you will find in your own backyard.”

1. Pretoria and Johannesburg

If you happen to stay in Pretoria or Johannesburg, Finfoot Lake Reserve is a stone’s throw from Pilanesberg Game Reserve. This property welcomes kids of all ages and offers activities like Segway tours, swimming, four-by-four game drives, barge cruises, canoeing, mountain biking, bush walks and fishing. Choose either a chalet or a self-catering villa for the larger brood.

2. KZN

Down in KZN, you could also let the kids try out their new Christmas bucket and spade at the Blue Marlin, just 40 minutes south of Durban. This a great beach spot minus the hordes of holiday makers. This loveable old hotel has been renovated recently and offers family suites that are kind to the budget. Nothing beats having the beach right on your doorstep, with the breeze of added room service.

3. Be the king in your own castle at Avalon Springs in the Western Cape

Make a splash in this hotel’s natural hot springs, then head out to explore the Montagu area. Take a cruise down the Breede River, or try a family hike – it costs nothing!

4. How about a little excursion to Mozambique?

If you are looking for a budget-friendly family getaway outside of South Africa, why not try Mozambique?” asks Natalie Tenzer-Silva, manager of Dana Tours based in Maputo. “This year you can experience a new country, save added time and avoid the stress of planning. Southern Sun Maputo is currently running a special which includes all flights, transfers, tour discounts, food specials and accommodation, which is free for kids.”

5. If your eye is wandering a little further than Mozambique this year, what about the Seychelles?

For the ultimate exotic beach destination that surprisingly won’t burn holes in your bank card, try Coral Strand. This affordable accommodation option is located on Mahé – the main island – which is packed with enough adventure to keep the kids entertained, with more than enough water to tire out those little legs.

6. Berjaya Beau Vallon Bay

Berjaya Beau Vallon Bay is also found on Mahé, the adults can steal a bit of time to kick back at the spa or join the kids in some organised activities such as snorkelling, swimming, volleyball and diving. Nothing beats tucking in to a family meal which is not hard to find at the multiple dining options available on site. The open-air pizzeria comes highly recommended.
