Plan a wedding with Kia Johnson’s helpful tips…
Radio 2000 and TV presenter Kia Johnson recently tied the knot with the love of her life Branny Draai, in an intimate and exclusive wedding at a private location in Langebaan, Cape Town. She chats to us about her marriage, wedding planning and her special day that changed her life forever.
Kia, how was it planning your wedding?
I was so stressed and worried that everything would not run smoothly on my big day but I had amazing support from close family and friends. When I finally arrived at the venue everything had been set up. When we finally began with the proceedings, ‘magical’ was the first word that came into my mind. I was so excited and nervous at the same time. By the time we exchanged our vows and were gazing into each others eyes I saw Branny tearing up which didn’t help keep my tears at bay.
Beautiful! Please share your top five tips on planning a flawless wedding day:
- Plan time into your schedule so that you are pre-prepared.
- Always shop around looking for the best prices.
- Don’t be afraid to negotiate your way through a deal, after all it’s your money you are spending.
- Instead of gifts (in a nice gesture) you can request your guests give you cash as a wedding present (and no, it’s not tacky if done right).
- Have a theme in mind so that you and whoever is assisting you with planning, know exactly what your expectations are on the day.
Stunning! Tell us more about your wedding menu…
I’m a Capetonian and a South African gal at heart. My food was traditional, starting off with a delicious butter chicken, and then a spit braai for the main course. We had an array of desserts chosen from Limnos Bakery in Green Point. Our wedding cake was a three-tier with beautifully designed pastel flowers by Sam’s Sweet Cake Treats.
Sounds like heaven on earth! So what stood out for you the most on your BIG day?
The whole day was just right but if I were to point one moment it was when my husband started tearing up saying his vows to me. That intimate moment further solidified our love for each other, plus we love good food and everyone couldn’t get enough of what was offered on the day.”
Priceless! In essence, what does marriage mean to you and how are you finding married life?
Marriage is more than just a piece of paper. It’s a bond, it’s a commitment and it shows that you have chosen to carry your life journey with another individual whom you love and adore and who complements you in every way.
