Kelly Khumalo surprised audiences at the Lyric Theatre when she lit up the room with pictures of Senzo Meyiwa and made it clear that she, like the rest of us, wants to know who killed him
“My daughter needs answers, I need answers. More so, the country wants to know what happened to their number one goalkeeper.”
These were the words of an emotional Kelly Khumalo who paused her “Up Close and Personal” set to deliver this stirring message. Up until then, her one-woman-show, held at Gold Reef’s Lyric Theatre, was a happy and casual affair.
Kelly gave a very intimate performance and story about Senzo. We sure did cry
But things turned serious as Kelly changed the subject sharply by bringing up the events of the 26th of October, 2014. She retold the story of that day from her perspective during an emotional segue adding painful details such as:
“My son was there, he watched the whole thing happen,” and how she held onto every ounce of faith she could: “I prayed until I ran out of words.”
Her emotional outburst was initially met with awkwardness, followed by applause as people recognised her bravery

Kelly Khumalo was blamed by some in South Africa for having ‘arranged’ Senzo’s death
In an interview with Gareth Cliff on Cliff Central, she was actually understanding of the fact that people needed someone to blame for Senzo’s death.
“I think the country was looking for someone to blame and I just happened to be there. I mean. if you really think about it‚ if I wanted to do what they were accusing me of doing‚ I wouldn’t have done it in front of my children in my own mother’s home and to a person that I loved dearly‚”
