This is not exactly a ‘polite topic’ but let’s face it, we all use it so why not make it green?! I’m talking about the toilet, an everyday essential which wastes 11 litres of water with every flush!
But it’s just water right? Yes, it’s just water and thanks to acid mine drainage, industrial pollution and sewerage, it’s predicted that 80% of South Africa’s fresh water resources will be so polluted it won’t be fit for consumption by 2015! Read more here.
Now before you say, “Oh pooh!” and throw your hands up in despair, here are a few ways we can save water…
Consider investing in a waterless or low-flush green toilet.
Adopt the slogan at home, ‘If it’s yellow, let it mellow’ and only flush when necessary.
Give a regular toilet a green update by filling up a water bottle and placing it the cistern of the toilet. A one litre bottle in a toilet cistern will save one litre of water with every flush.
We all have the ability and responsibility to save water, and with World Water Day coming up on 22 March, it’s worth talking about.
