Woolworths has just launched a reusable coffee themed shopping bag. The hope is that this shopping bag will help to raise awareness and lend support to organic coffee farmers in Tanzania whose livelihoods are being threatened by climate change. These farmers sell their coffee beans to the W Cafe.
In January 2011, Woolworths undertook an expedition to Mount Kilimanjaro to see first hand the plight of these farmers. Due to the melting ice-cap at the peak of the mountain, the 60 000 coffee farmers who farm on the slopes of Kilimanjaro are being badly affected.
The coffee shopping bag is made by two community enterprises which are supported by Woolworths as part of their Enterprise Development initiatives. Buy the coffee shopper at Woolworths stores nationwide for R19,95. It’s not too expensive and it’s for a good cause! The organic coffee beans from the foothills of Kilimanjaro can be purchased in selected stores and at cafes for R42,95 for 250g pack and R165,00 for a 1kg pack.
