“What should we do today?” is the most haunting refrain of the winter holidays

You might feel like you’ve done it all before, but chances are there are some options you still haven’t explored. Here’s our list:

Johannesburg

1. Lindfield Victorian House Museum

A perfect replica of life during the Victorian era, this is an outing that’s best suited to older kids, but it will certainly capture their imagination as they encounter a real-life Downton Abbey experience. From the butler’s pantry (complete with a pull-out bed allowing the butler to keep an eye on the family silver overnight) to the almost life-size doll’s house in the nursery, they’ll be fascinated by the way some Jo’burgers used to live.

Tours offered daily from R70.

2. The Strawberry Farm

Bear this one in mind for summer, as berry picking season runs from September to December. You can visit anytime, though, to pick your own veggies, enjoy a picnic or eat at the in-house restaurant. Don’t forget that you can fill your fridge with raspberries picked fresh from the Field Berry Farm during summer.

Strawberry picking from R70.
