The winter school holidays have started and we’ve all survived day one. Sjoe! Only three million more to go!

Of course, in winter the cold weather keeps the little ones inside and tempting as it is to let the TV do the entertaining, I’m determined to minimise TV time and maximise memory-making! We have the National Arts Festival to look forward to here in Grahamstown, but then two weeks of nothing to do and nowhere to go follows which fills me with a sense of dread.

If you’re lucky enough to live in one of the major cities, you’ll find plenty of entertainment on offer for the little ones. Take a look at these lists; Cape Town, Durban, Port Elizabeth and Jo’burg.

But if, like me, you’re in a smaller town, with a smaller budget, here are 10 awesome, at-home things to do with your kids when boredom strikes.

Always have bubbles on hand: Kids of all ages love bubbles and older kids can keep their siblings entertained for ages by blowing bubbles down on them from on top of a chair or table. Add a teaspoon of sugar to your bubble mix for longer lasting bubbles and pop in some food colouring for extra fun.
