Just as we discovered on our first visit, South Beach is the perfect blend of comfort and style with world class views and centrally located along the Atlantic Seaboard
We were delighted to return to the pristine hotel once again this year to experience the brand new wing that has been added to the hotel. The new wing includes a rooftop pool and bar which are open to all guests, and the apartments follow the same thoughtful blueprint as before.
South Beach is perfectly situated on Camps Bay’s world famous beachfront, a hop, skip and a jump away from many upmarket restaurants and cocktail bars, and just across the road from the beautiful seashore. Within walking distance from the local supermarket if one needs to get any self-catering extras, the apartments are also on the doorstep of culture, on the same road as the Theatre on the Bay.
Bike to the beach
Schwinn bicycles are available to guests who’d like to take a scenic ride to Llandudno or venture along the vibrant promenade along Sea Point beach.
With an assortment of books in the mini library, one could grab something to enjoy on one of Cape Town’s spectacular nearby beaches. We weren’t lucky enough to get a third floor apartment view this time around, but our patio opened onto the pool area, which gave us direct access to the sparkling Camps Bay style glass pool.
The ground floor apartments are for those who are afraid of heights or want to feel part of a holiday social scene, although they do offer an additional set of curtains between their patio and the pool for privacy.
Every South Beach apartment enjoys the same five-star finishes
Tastefully-decorated, spacious, modern… It’s all one could wish for from a seaside hotel. The only thing that changes from one suite to the next, is the charming, unobtrusive artwork.
The hotel has free undercover parking, a laundry, gym and the new wing features a crystal-clear rooftop pool and comfy lounge and bar area. The views are amazing and what better way to sip a drink while watching the sun go down over the magnificent Atlantic Ocean?!
Unfortunately, the weather was a bit too crisp for us to enjoy a swim, but the gorgeous pools were very tempting.
Relax and unwind
South Beach has a holiday feel, making it easy to unwind watching TV in bed, enjoying Nespresso coffee on the patio or reading a book in the sunny reading nook.
The spotless kitchen has everything one can think of, from a built-in fridge to easy-to-use Whirlpool appliances. The cutlery is first-rate, and guests can find anything they need in the cupboards, from a tin opener to an egg flip. The minimalist feel may give guests a few ideas for their own kitchen and bathroom, with down-lighting, large mirrors, gliding drawers and slow-closing foot pedal bins.
The lounge is fitted with chic furniture and an LCD screen, a sound bar and wireless Sennheiser headphones if you’re a night owl and want to catch up on a host of DSTV entertainment channels, from music to movies to sport. We enjoyed a lazy night in watching a double feature, first Pixar’s delightful Finding Dory, and then the comedy spy flick Central Intelligence.
The comfortable king-size bed is wonderful for those who like to sprawl out like a cat. Luxury linens and plush mattresses make it easy to float away into dreamland or make reading under one of the night lamps a challenge to stay awake!
The bathroom includes beautifully fragranced Charlotte Rhys products, an extra-large bathtub, a wonderful rain shower head and a heated towel rack. We decided to make use of the rain shower in order to do our bit to help Cape Town’s dire water shortage. The hotel encourages guests to save water by re-using towels where possible.
South Beach noted my vegetarian dietary requirements and kindly stocked the fridge with complimentary milk, eggs, mushrooms, cheese, yoghurt, fruit salad, Hillcrest honey and jam, and Norwegian salmon (for hubby) for our breakfast. As promised, we found some fresh croissants and a baguette outside our door the next morning. The waking up process was made much easier by this generous breakfast.
Mixing business and pleasure is easy
While designed for holiday-makers, South Beach doesn’t discriminate, and guests who need to mix business with pleasure and catch up on a little work can make use of a sleek desk, which doubles as a great spot for board games. With plenty of cupboard space, it’s easy to unpack, and the apartments are equipped with air conditioning and underfloor heating to enable one to get the environment just right.
South Beach is all about the small touches, which make it a cut above the rest. The staff were efficient and on standby, respecting our privacy – I’d like to make special mention of the pleasant porter and cleaning lady.
While it’s best enjoyed in sunny weather and on the uppermost floors, it is a pleasure to visit there in the winter months too.
