Fashion Wire Press congratulates Isabel Toledo Loree Rodkin, and Jason Wu on having their designs chosen by First Lady Michelle Obama for the inauguration day festivities.
Michelle Obama honours new American deisgners
For the day-time ceremony, Mrs. Obama wore an Isabel Toledo lemongrass-colored lace and wool dress and jacket ensemble. And for the evening balls, she chose Jason Wu’s ivory Swarovski-encrusted one-shoulder gown. She paired the dress with jewelry from Loree Rodkin, whose designs she has worn many times, including on election night. Both Wu and Rodkin’s work has now been donated to the Smithsonian Institution.
Fashion Wire Press also congratulates Maria Cornejo, Narciso Rodriguez, and Thakoon Panichgul, whose designs Mrs. Obama wore throughout the election campaign and the time leading up to the inauguration and congratulations to Milly Smith for Dr. Jill Biden’s choice to wear a Milly Houndstooth Roll Neck dress for the inauguration.
A new generation of American design talent
We are so proud of all of you! And so pleased that Mrs. Obama and Dr. Biden have embraced a new generation of American design talent.
But what about South African designers?
Here in South Africa, what our politicians and their wives wear goes largely unnoticed. This is surely not from lack of talent as South Africa is full of some awesome design talent as seen in women’s magazines and events like the Joburg Fashion Week.
Are our politicians not choosing designer couture or are we as a nation not giving our up-and-coming talented designers the recognition they deserve? Come on South Africa – both high profile women and the media – support local designers: they deserve it!
