If you don’t enjoy weeding, here are three eco-friendly gardening tricks that discourage weed growth…
1. Before planting a new garden bed, make sure you work organic compost into the soil.
Organic compost works wonders, according to Kievits Kroon Country Estate landscaper Stephane Bodenstein. She recommends working organic compost into the soil three weeks before planting to ensure strong plant growth and reduce the number of weeds in the garden bed.
2. Place damp newspaper around plants, overlapping as you go, and cover the newspaper with bark chips.
Weeds find it difficult to grow through the newspaper giving you a few weed-free months until the newspaper decomposes.
3. If you’re looking for an eco-friendly way to get rid of weeds that grow in between paving stones, spray them with white vinegar and they should shrivel within a day or two. To rid your paving of resilient weeds, spray them more than once.
